GVM, axle & tow ball — sorted.

Pick your 4WD, tick what you've already got bolted on, add your gear, then build your Base Station. We'll show what's left on your GVM, your rear axle, and your tow ball — the three numbers those comments are really about. Fully loaded, our Base Station is 150 kg, about 4–5% of most 4WDs' GVM.

GVM and payload are approximate for the popular grade and already include a full tank of fuel — so don't add fuel again below. Rear axle figures are indicative: the limit's on your placard, and the empty-axle weight is estimated from your kerb weight. Got weighbridge numbers? Type your real figures in. Both GVM and rear axle need to stay in the green.

Rear axle is a guide, not a measurement — enter weighbridge figures up top for an exact number. Tow ball shows what the loaded rack leaves for a trailer; remember a trailer's own ball weight also adds to your GVM and rear axle above. Every limit must be respected to be legal.

This calculator is a planning guide, not engineering certification. GVM is the most your whole vehicle is allowed to weigh, fully loaded. Payload already includes a full tank of fuel, so don't add fuel again. The rear axle has its own separate limit, and because the Base Station sits behind the rear axle it loads that axle at roughly 1.5× its weight — so a fully loaded 150 kg rack shows as about 225 kg on the rear axle, while it lifts a little off the front.

Tow ball download is the static downward force on your tow ball. The Base Station is a genuine pass-through hitch, so you keep towing — but the rack's weight and a trailer's ball weight share the same tow ball limit, so size the trailer to what's left. Vehicle figures shown are approximate for the popular grade and vary by model year and options. Rear axle results are indicative — they rely on an estimated empty-axle weight unless you enter your own weighbridge figures. Always confirm GVM, axle and tow ball ratings against your compliance placard, and run a loaded rig over a public weighbridge before a big trip. The Base Station is rated to 150 kg total, ADR compliant with a 3.5-tonne tow rating.
